Caernarfon

Gwynedd, North Wales

The Queen's gate. The high level of the gate meant that originally it had to be reached by a great stone ramp. The height of the gate was dictated by the height of the earlier Norman motte at this point.
The Southern Front. From left: Queen's Tower, Chamberlain Tower, Black Tower and Cistern Tower.
The Eagle Tower. Its grand proportions set it apart from all the others of the castle. It was probably intended to provide accomodation for King Edward's lieutenant. Here was born Edward II Prince of Wales.
The exterior of the King's Gate, great twin towered gatehouse.
View of the castle (Eagle Tower) and town walls from the Menai Strait.
